                                                           NEWSLETTER - January 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope that all of you have had a good start to the New Year. As we are nearly at the half way point of the school year, I thought it would be a good time to provide everyone with a few gentle reminders.

I am sure that you are aware that the school monitors attendance very closely. If your child is absent from school for any reason, please either call the school office on 01708 446472 and choose option 1 to leave a voicemail message or option 4 if you need to speak to a member of staff. Alternatively, please e-mail absence@shj.havering.sch.uk with details of your child’s absence. This helps us to ensure that all pupils are safe and that the reason for your child’s absence is appropriately recorded.

When a child’s attendance falls below 95%, a letter is sent to the parent/carer to make them aware that their child’s attendance is causing concern. If the pupil’s attendance fails to improve, the case will be referred to the Education Welfare Officer who may contact the parents to arrange a meeting to discuss the issues surrounding low attendance levels.

Appointments (eg GP, dentist) should, where possible, be arranged outside of school hours. Where it is unavoidable and appointments have to be made during school hours, the school should be notified in advance. The appointment card or a note is acceptable so that a Medical mark can be recorded for the absence. Parents are requested to minimise the amount of teaching time that is lost as a result of such appointments, by registering their child for the first lesson if the appointment is not until later in the morning / afternoon and ensuring that they return to school as soon as possible following the appointment.

Last term we had 79 instances where children arrived after registers had closed at 9.20am. When a child arrives at school after 8.50am and before 9.20am they will receive a Late mark. However, after 9.20am the child is recorded as having an unauthorised absence as they have arrived more than 30 minutes late for school. The unauthorised marks are monitored by the Education Welfare Officer and fines may be issued. Please therefore ensure that your child arrives promptly at the start of the day.

Please take a look at the Home page of our school website www.shj.havering.sch.uk  every week and check our Award winners. We publish which classes have won our Attendance Awards, which House has been awarded the most house points and which children have achieved a gold certificate each week. Also, please do check the Events Calendar on the Homepage regularly for updates and the School Photos tab on the Parents page for reports and photos of school trips and special events.

P.E. Kit

We still have a number of children who do not have their P.E. kits in school. Unfortunately we only have a very limited amount of spare P.E. kit in school so children have to miss their P.E. lessons due to not having the correct kit.  Please therefore ensure that your child’s P.E. kit remains in school during term time and is only taken home during the holidays for washing. If this becomes a persistent problem, we may contact parents to discuss the situation further.

Please ensure that your child’s sQuid account is regularly topped up. Unfortunately if your account falls into arrears of £4.40 or more we will no longer be able to allow your child to choose a school dinner and you will be required to provide a packed lunch for your child until the account is topped up.

Social Media

We have recently had some incidents involving bullying on social media. This can cause a great deal of distress for those involved. We would strongly urge parents to think carefully before allowing pupils to use apps such as Facebook and Snap Chat. Many of these sites have age recommendations of 14 years or older. If you do decide to allow your child access to social media sites, please monitor their use at all times. There is some useful information regarding online safety  under the Parents tab on the School website. If you have any concerns regarding the use of social media or online safety, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

We have recently received complaints from residents living in Salisbury Road as parents are parking over their driveways. They have advised us that it is happening more and more and causing stress and bad feelings. Please can we therefore remind you to be considerate of our neighbours when parking and not to obstruct driveways? Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated.
