                                                                         NEWSLETTER June 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you have had a chance to see the new markings that were applied to the playground during the half term holiday. The student council had lots of input into the design and I would like to thank them for their many suggestions and drawings. All the children have really enjoyed trying out the new activities this week.  The second phase of the project to install a trim trail, ball shoot, football target board and stop watch will take place during the week beginning 9th July.

It is with regret that I have to inform you that Miss Beasley will be leaving us on Monday 11th June due to personal circumstances. However, we would like to welcome Mr Frith, an experienced teacher, who has joined us from another Havering school. Mr Frith will teach 3 Ash for the remainder of this academic year. We hope that he will be very happy with at Squirrels Heath.

Sports Day

The tentative date for sports day is Friday 13th July. At the moment we are still waiting for confirmation that we will be able to use the school field. We have contacted the Local Authority on five occasions but are still awaiting clarification. As soon as we hear back, we will let you know.

Book Fair

Please be advised we will be hosting this summer's 'Travelling Book Fair' next week after school. It will be open from Tuesday 12th June to Friday 15th June under the shelter in the playground.

A brochure has been sent home, but there are many more books on offer, so please come along and have a look.

Summer Fete 23rd June

On Wednesday 20th June we will be allowing pupils to wear their trainers for the day in place of their school shoes. We ask that children make a donation by bringing in a bottle for the tombola stall at the summer fete (wine, fruit juice, bubble bath etc). Your support would be much appreciated.

Please hand any bottle donations straight into the school office.  We hope to see lots of you at the fete.

On Wednesday 9th May we took 2 netball teams to Scott's Primary school to play 'friendly' matches.

The 16 children involved played in the very warm temperatures with hard work, determination and superb team work.

Team A    Scotts 7-4 Squirrels Heath

Team B     Scotts 5-1 Squirrels Heath

Despite losses, both teams thoroughly enjoyed the chance to play competitive sport against another school and are very much looking forward to our next match against Suttons Primary School at the end of this half term.

Well done Squirrels Heath and best of luck for your next game!

May we remind you that if your child is unable to attend a club that they are enrolled in, please ensure that the club leader is informed. This helps us with our safeguarding procedures. When children are absent from an after school club, it is the responsibility of school staff to find out where they are. Please help us to ensure that our systems are as efficient and effective as they can be to keep children safe.

A copy of the club timetable has been sent out via parentmail, is available on our school website www.shj.havering.sch.uk and is on display on our boards at the front and back of school. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

P.E. Kit

We still have a number of children who are not keeping their P.E. kits in school. Unfortunately we only have a very limited amount of spare P.E. kit in school so children have to miss their P.E. lessons due to not having the correct kit. Please therefore ensure that your child’s P.E. kit remains in school during term time and is returned to school on the first day back after a holiday if it is taken home for washing. It would also help if all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Due to the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) that came into effect from 25th May we have had to seek consent from you for some of the ways we use information about you. If you have not already returned your consent forms we kindly ask that they are returned to the school office as soon as possible.

We would like to respectively request that all appointments (eg GP, dentist) should, where possible, be arranged outside of school hours. Where it is unavoidable and appointments have to be made during school hours, the school should be notified in advance. The appointment card or a note is acceptable so that a Medical mark can be recorded for the absence. Parents are requested to minimise the amount of teaching time that is lost as a result of such appointments, by registering their child for the first lesson if the appointment is not until later in the morning / afternoon and ensuring that they return to school as soon as possible following the appointment.

Free School Meals

The Government has recently introduced two changes to pupils’ entitlement to free school meals:

  1. The Government is beginning to implement Universal Credit across the country to support people on low incomes. This will happen gradually and will apply to new claimants before any changes are made to those on existing benefits. For the new claimants who are placed on Universal Credit rather than the current range of benefits, their child will be entitled to a free school meal if the household earnings are less than £7,400 per year excluding tax and any other benefits.

  2. Once eligibility has been agreed, including those children already receiving free school meals, children will continue to be entitled to a free school meal even if their parents or carers come off of benefit following a change in their personal circumstances if for example, they begin to work. This entitlement will last until the pupils finish the phase of education they are in (primary or secondary) as at 31st March 2022. There is therefore no need to reapply for free school meals, if your child receives them now they will continue to do so until at least 2022.

  3. These changes do not affect infant free meals which will continue for children in reception, year 1 or year 2 classes. However, if you are currently in receipt of benefits or begin to claim before your child leaves year 2 we would encourage you to apply for free school meals as this will secure your child’s entitlement until at least 2022 even if, by the time your child reaches year 3, your personal circumstances have changed.

Please apply on Havering Council’s website, the link is provided below.
