March 2019 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Road Safety

Some of you may have noticed a group of our pupils outside the school on Wednesday morning. They were reminding drivers about road safety and will be outside the school every Wednesday in March. Sadly, we have reports of some parents stopping in the middle of the road to drop their children off or parking on the zig zag lines in front of the school. We urge all parents to leave a little earlier and park a little further away to minimise the risk of one of our children getting hurt.

I would like to express our thanks to the children who volunteered to help with this campaign. Please show the children your support by adhering to the rules of the road.

Knife Crime

Many of you will have heard the sad news of Jodie Chesney, a 17 year old pupil at Havering Sixth Form College, who was stabbed last weekend. Unfortunately, she is one of several young people who die as a result of knife crime every year with the trend rising at an alarming rate. The purple bows at our school gates (both front and back) are hung to remember the victims of knife crime.

A reminder that Mrs Wells, our Learning Mentor, is available for pupils to speak to if they feel upset or worried in any way. We have also arranged for the local Police to speak to children in Years 5 and 6 about Knife Crime in the Summer term.

Poet Visit

On Tuesday 5th March, Karl Nova, a poet and rap artist visited the school, spending time with each year group. He performed poems and told stories of what had influenced him, as well as working with the children to create their very own poems. He was thoroughly entertaining and brought a new dynamic on how poems could be enjoyed. He commented on 'what a joy' our children were and it was great to see so many of you queuing up to meet him at the end of the day and buy his book. Later in the week, the children worked on their poems in class. We have been so impressed with the quality of work produced that we have decided to put it on display near the front entrance of the school. If you are in school next week for Science Week, do stop to have a read.

World Book Day

On Thursday 7th March it was 'World Book Day'. As usual the children came to school in a wonderful array of costumes which we all were able to see in Assembly that morning. Staff and children shared their favourite books and spoke of why they had chosen their particular character. Once again, thank you to all those parents, grandparents etc that worked hard on ensuring their child looked fabulous! I hope all the children brought home their book token - don't forget to claim your free book which are available at many supermarkets and book shops locally. Keep reading everyone!

Healthy Snack Stall

The Student Council Healthy Snack Stall has been very popular. So far the children have raised £85.42. A big thank you to everyone for helping to make this such a success The snack stall will be available again on the 28th and 29th of March and the 2nd and 3rd of April.

Sport

Well done to both boys and girls football teams! They attended tournaments at the end of last half term and did fantastically well.

The boys took part in the West Ham United/ Primary Stars tournament. This was a competition against other schools in East London and Essex. They played very well against other high performing teams and made it through to the semi-finals. A fantastic achievement boys. We are all extremely proud of you.

The girls played really well at their competition too but unfortunately didn’t get through to the quarter finals. They really impressed on the day though as they were a predominantly Year 5 team who played against older pupils. We can’t wait to go back to the tournament next year with a bit more experience and age on our side.

P.E. Kit

Unfortunately, there are still a number of children who do not have a P.E. kit in school. We have a very limited amount of spare P.E. kit in school to loan to children. Please therefore ensure that your child always has their P.E. kit in school so that they do not have to miss their P.E. lessons:
