October 2019 Newsletter

Oct. 18, 2019, 2:25 p.m.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Staff Babies

We are delighted to announce that Mrs Hammel gave birth to a baby girl and Mrs Chestnutt to a baby boy. We are sure you would like to join us in sending them our very best wishes.

Thank you to everyone who kindly donated food for our Harvest celebration this year. All donations will be taken to Harold Hill Food Bank for distribution.

Thank you also to all Year 3 parents and family members who attended our Year 3 Harvest assembly. It was lovely to see so many people take the time to come along to the performance.

Fun Run

Thank you to all the Y5 children and staff for organising the Fun Run. Despite the weather, it was great to see the Y5 children giving all the children taking part so much encouragement and support. Thank you for all your very generous sponsorship money that you have sent in so far. We kindly ask that you send in any remaining sponsorship money to the school as soon as possible. We hope to update you on the total amount raised in our next newsletter.

Cross Country Competition

On Wednesday 16th October our Cross Country Team participated in a borough-wide competition at Stubbers Activity Centre. All children did exceptionally well and completed the tough and muddy course, demonstrating resilience and determination. One of our children showed an immense amount of courage when she fell but got up to finish the race ahead of others. Two of our children stopped to help a child from another school, sacrificing their places to ensure the injured child was ok. Hallie in Pine class ran an exceptionally good race and was selected to try out for the Havering Cross Country Youth Games. We would like to wish her the best of luck in the follow up competition. Overall, the team represented the school admirably and we are so very proud of all of them!

Bio-dome Project

To build on our commitment as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) leading school, we would like to build a bio-dome in our quad area. The bio-dome is an enclosed ecosystem which uses hydroponics to grow plants.  This unique resource would allow pupils the opportunity to learn first-hand about ecosystems and sustainability as well as different methods for growing food. Mr Hackett and I have been to visit two schools in Reading and Ruislip who have access to a bio-dome on their grounds and were amazed at the impact that this had on the children’s scientific knowledge and understanding. We would very much like to provide this amazing opportunity to the children at Squirrels Heath.

Unfortunately, this resource involves a huge financial investment (over £26,000). The school has been able to raise most of the money from external sources, fundraising events and using the school budget but we still require a further £3000. Ideally we would like to schedule the build for the Easter holidays 2020 so that children can begin to use the new facility in the Summer term but this can only happen with your help.

We have therefore put an option to donate money to this fund on online payment system, Squid. You may donate any amount – every little bit helps! We would greatly appreciate your support to help us to make this project possible.

Winning House this Half Term

The winning house in our house point league tables this half term is Farah.  Children in Farah house may come to school in home clothes on Monday 28th October. Pupils in all other houses must come to school in full uniform as normal.

Class Attendance and Award Winners

Please take a look at the Home page of our school website www.shj.havering.sch.uk  every week and check our Award winners. We publish the attendance for each class for the week and which Upper and Lower school class has won our Attendance Awards. We also publish which House has been awarded the most house points and which children have achieved a gold certificate each week. We would also like to encourage you to check the Events Calendar on the Homepage regularly for updates too.

We will be selling poppies in school from Friday 1st November onwards. Children may bring in their donations to purchase a poppy up until Friday 8th November.

P.E. Kit

We are still experiencing problems There are a number of children who do not have a P.E. kit in school. We have a very limited amount of spare P.E. kit in school to loan to children. Please therefore ensure that your child always has the following items in school so that they do not have to miss their P.E. lessons:

Leotard or T-shirt (white) and red shorts.

Parents Evening

Our Autumn Term Parents’ Evening meetings are taking place on Tuesday 5th and Thursday 7th November. Your child would have brought home a letter this week for you to book a timeslot to meet with their class teacher. If you have not yet returned your request slip please return it to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.

We have recently received complaints from residents living in Heath Park Road and Salisbury Road as parents are parking over their driveways. They have advised us that it is happening more and more and is causing them a lot of stress and creating bad feelings. Please can we therefore request that parents are considerate of our neighbours when parking and not obstruct driveways. We would also like to remind parents that it is illegal to park on the zig zag lines outside school between 8.15am and 9.15am and 3pm and 4.15pm. To help ease congestion in Salisbury Road we would like to urge all parents to walk their children to and from school wherever possible. If it is not possible to walk the whole journey then please consider parking further afield and walk the remainder of the journey. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated.

Music Lessons

If your child would be interested in learning to play a musical instrument in school please contact Havering Music School on 01708 450313. At the moment we have teachers coming in weekly offering piano, clarinet, violin, cello, brass and guitar lessons. We have booklets available at the school office with more details if you are interested.
