September 2018 Newsletter V2

Sept. 28, 2018, 2:42 p.m.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Staffing

We would like to welcome to the staff Mrs Suzanne Cross and Mr Kevin Powell who are both experienced teachers. Mrs Cross and Mr Powell will be providing small group and 1:1 tuition to pupils in Years 4,5 and 6. Their work will enable us to increase the support available to our pupils.

Sadly, we have to say goodbye at the end of next week to one of our Teaching Assistants, Mrs Shenine Pillay, who has been successful in obtaining a position a little closer to home. We would like thank her for her contributions and hard work throughout her time with us and wish her well in her new school.

Clubs

We are currently looking to expand the number and variety of clubs available to the children. As well as the clubs that Premier Sports offer, we have tried to include clubs which do not incur an additional cost to parents as we understand the financial pressures that families face. Please have a look at what is on offer to see if there is something that appeals to your child. A copy of the timetable is included with this newsletter.  I would like to thank all members of staff who have freely offered their time to enable us to increase provision for our pupils.

School Games Silver Award

We are pleased to announce that the school has been awarded the School Games Silver Award. This is a fantastic achievement for the school. We would like to thank Mrs King for all her time and effort in organising opportunities for our children to take part in a variety of competitive sport both in school and in the locality.

Attendance and Punctuality

We would like to thank all parents and carers for their cooperation and support with attendance last academic year. Our whole school attendance for 2017/18 was 96% which is above both National and Havering averages.

Good attendance and punctuality are incredibly important in helping children to achieve their full potential. Children with poor attendance often struggle academically and socially and have difficulty catching up with missed work. Similarly, children who come in late miss out on vital revision work which takes place between 8:50am and 9:05am each day. The school playground is supervised from 8:30am each day to allow pupils time to socialise with their friends before the start of the school day.

Please be aware that if a child arrives at school after 8.50am and before 9.20am they will receive a late mark. Children arriving after 9.20am will be recorded as having an unauthorised absence as they have arrived more than 30 minutes late for school. Punctuality and unauthorised absences are monitored by the Education Welfare Officer and fines may be issued. Please therefore ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives at school promptly. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Appointments

Appointments (eg GP, dentist) should, where possible, be arranged outside of school hours. Where it is unavoidable and appointments have to be made during school hours, the school should be notified in advance. The appointment card or a note is acceptable so that a medical mark can be recorded for the absence. Parents are requested to minimise the amount of teaching time that is lost as a result of such appointments, by registering their child for the first lesson if the appointment is not until later in the morning / afternoon and ensuring that they return to school as soon as possible following the appointment.

Website

Please take a look at the Home page of our school website www.shj.havering.sch.uk  every week and check our Award winners. We publish which classes have won our Attendance Awards, which House has been awarded the most house points and which children have achieved a gold certificate each week. Also, please do check the Events Calendar on the Homepage regularly for updates.

Free School Meals Eligibility

We would like to encourage any parents or carers who think they may be eligible to claim for free school meals to log onto the Council’s website:

https://www.havering.gov.uk/info/20006/schools_and_education/431/free_school_meals_and_pupil-premium

or alternatively to contact Sally Delaney, London Borough of Havering, on telephone 01708 433929 for immediate eligibility confirmation.

Eligibility for Free School Meals also means that the school will receive additional Pupil Premium money which we use to fund the following:

Please help us to help your child by claiming free school meals if you meet the eligibility criteria. Our office staff would be more than happy to assist you with your application in any way they can.

Jeans for Genes

Thank you to all those children who came into school wearing jeans last Friday in support of the charity and for your donations. We are delighted to announce that we raised £279.72

Parking

We have been contacted by a local resident complaining that parents are parking on private property. Please can we therefore remind you to be considerate of our neighbours when parking. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated.
